Does the appearance and arrangement of your teeth make you uncomfortable? You’re not alone!
It is common to have crooked, misshaped or scattered teeth which can contribute to a feeling of self-consciousness when smiling or talking.Dental braces are commonly used to realign the teeth, but not everyone loves to have metals glittering from their mouth when they smile.
Is it possible to realign crooked teeth without metal braces? Fortunately, the answer is yes – with Invisalign.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a dental treatment used to correct various dental deforms by the use of clear, removable plastic trays. These trays are worn for an average of 20 hours daily, giving them enough time to exert the required force to put the teeth back in shape. Some of the deforms that can be corrected by using Invisalign include:
Crooked Teeth: This is a situation in which the teeth do not line up properly and jut in different directions, leading to a disjointed appearance.
Sparse Arrangement: Here, the teeth are situated too far from each other, giving the mouth a scattered look.
Open bite: When a person bites down on food (or anything) and the front teeth remain open, the condition is known as an open bite.
Closed bite: This is the reverse of an open bite in which the individual’s lower teeth remain under their upper teeth when they bite.
Crossbite: This condition combines both the open and closed bite. Some of the upper teeth are under the lower teeth while some jut out when a bite is taken.
Misaligned Jaws: Sometimes, the arrangement of the teeth themselves is not the problem. When the lower jaw is out of sync with the upper jaw, the teeth don’t match as well as they should and this could lead to a deform in appearance.
Why Choose Invisalign?
Invisalign has become more popular than traditional dental braces for the following reasons:
Invisalign corrects teeth arrangement while staying almost completely invisible. You can have all your teeth properly repositioned and not worry about cracking a smile while this is happening. This is an improvement over metal braces which are conspicuous and make it obvious that some form of dental treatment is going on.
Invisalign is detachable and can be removed when you want to brush your teeth or clean your mouth. This is not the case with metal braces which can only be fixed or removed by the dentist. Metal braces can also feel a bit uncomfortable at first and they take more time to get used to than Invisalign.
Finally, with Invisalign, there is no need for the uncomfortable tightening of the metal strings that has to be done with metal braces./p>
What happens during an Invisalign procedure?
Just as with many other dental treatments, getting an Invisalign starts with a check-up to determine if it is the best treatment course and take an impression of the mouth. The dimensions gotten from the standard impression are used to manufacture a set of custom-made plastic trays. The number of trays in an Invisalign treatment varies depending on the level of misalignment in the patient’s teeth.
During a second appointment, the first set of plastic trays are inserted and the patient keeps them on for two weeks before returning to get the next set of plastic trays inserted. You will keep returning every two weeks for a new set of plastic trays until the dentist is satisfied that the desired treatment outcomes have been achieved.
Playing your part.
The time required for the Invisalign treatments depends on how well you comply with the dentist’s instructions for its usage. If you do not wear the trays for as long as you should, the realignment does not happen on schedule and you may need one or more extra appointments to complete the treatment.
